San Diego County Board of Supervisors
INVESTING IN SAN DIEGO FAMILIES: SUPERVISOR GASPAR TO RECOMMEND
PAID PARENTAL LEAVE, CHILDCARE AND LACTATION SUPPORT
WHAT: Supervisor Gaspar will propose a package of benefits to help support working families which will come before the Board of Supervisors on January 28. If approved, the plan would implement eight weeks of paid parental leave for County employees, explore options for on-site childcare at county facilities and introduce a lactation policy to support nursing mothers.
San Diego is facing a childcare crisis. Nearly two thirds of parents have difficulty finding high quality care that is dependable, convenient and affordable. This childcare shortage is having a major impact on businesses and our regional economy. On-site childcare for County employees will help address this problem and benefit our employees.
Paid leave for new mothers and fathers will relieve the enormous financial stress parents face now as they bond with their newborn but don’t receive a paycheck.
Board approval of this proposal will also expand opportunities to use accrued sick leave to care for a new child and create a program to help employees navigate the complex family leave system.
