"Keep Kids Safe Program"

Keep Kids Safe Program

The number of San Diegans who died from unintentional drug-related deaths rose for the fourth year in a row. Opioids and fentanyl played a big part and experts say the epidemic is getting worse. We cannot rely solely on government to resolve it so I've teamed with Safe Homes Coalition and the San Diego Association of REALTORS to launch the "Keep Kids Safe Program". Our mission is to invite San Diegans to properly discard their  expired and unused/unwanted prescriptions so they don't continue to get into the wrong hands. We recently recorded a series of public service announcements to raise awareness about how kids and teens are accessing prescription pills, and how adults are targeting open houses to steal opioids. Take a moment to watch these public service announcements https://youtu.be/ToHm17dIIpAhttps://youtu.be/Fm2wIqQNSBc
and get involved by visiting www.makeitasafehome.org. We need everyone's help to end the #opioidcrisis.

Celebrating Our Growing Live Well Family

Celebrating Our Growing Live Well Family

Our little Live Well San Diego family isn't so little anymore. Supervisor Jim Desmond and I recently welcomed Solutions for Change as a new partner, bringing the total number of members to 440. I am so proud of Solutions for how it empowers homeless families to transform their lives. Its model is so successful, it has been nationally recognized for permanently solving homelessness. Congratulations Solutions!

 An Evening With Space Legends

An Evening With Space Legends

The 50th anniversary celebration of the Apollo 9 mission was out of this world! I turned around to find Buzz Aldrin talking to Neil Armstrong's son! On stage, all three Apollo 9 astronauts were sharing incredible stories about their adventure into space. A big thank you to the San Diego Air and Space Museum, CEO Jim Kidrick, and Board Chair Mark Larson for bringing these legends here! 🚀

Encinitas Rotary Peacemaker of the Year

Encinitas Rotary Peacemaker of the Year

It was my honor to nominate Azim Khamisa for the 2019 Encinitas Rotary Peacemaker of the Year Award. Following the loss of his only son to a senseless, gang-related murder in San Diego, Azim chose the path of forgiveness and compassion rather than revenge and bitterness. This selfless choice led to the establishment of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation and the subsequent forgiveness movement which has reached millions of children and adults across the world. The Peacemaker Award Committee voted unanimously to confirm Azim as its Peacemaker of the Year. We are very fortunate to have him in our community.

Helping Dreams Come True for Teens

Helping Dreams Come True for Teens

It's something a lot of teen girls daydream about... prom. For other girls, it's their quinceanera. And it's all about the DRESS. But sadly, some teens can't afford to buy the expensive gowns. That's where the San Diego County Library and The Princess Project San Diego come in. They're collecting prom dresses that you can donate at any of the 33 library branches. Your dress could make a young lady's dream come true! Details: https://bit.ly/2XMMFyn
