Soaring to New Heights

This year‘s Miramar Air Show was spectacular and a very special one for me. I was privileged to ride with the elite “Patriots Jet Team” as they took to the San Diego skies. My pilot, John “Boards” Posson gave me the ride of a lifetime that included several Gs and maneuvers that are not for the faint of heart. The view of San Diego County thousands of feet in the air was breathtaking. The Patriots pilots travel to several air shows around the West Coast year after year. What’s unique about them is that they and their crews are all civilian volunteers. They do it because they are passionate about aviation and hope to inspire the young children at the air shows to explore the field. My flight gave me a greater appreciation for the Miramar Air Show and for our country’s military pilots. The years of extensive training and laser sharp focus required once they are in flight is quite remarkable. Thank you to those at MCAS Miramar for making this such an incredible experience.

AB 1250 Dead. For Now.

AB 1250 would have been devastating for the thousands of people in San Diego County who rely on special services from non-profits and community-based organizations. The bill regarding contracts for personal services would have required California counties to go through complicated and unnecessary steps in their contracting process with non-profits, severely limiting their abilities. Those who would have suffered the most were our most vulnerable neighbors. Thankfully, AB 1250 did not make it out of a Senate committee this session. However, we may be grappling with it again next year when it is back on the table. Stay tuned.

Focusing on Hunger in San Diego County

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. What you may not realize is how many of our neighbors go to bed hungry every day. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank says one in six adults and one in five children don't have enough food to eat. Employees and volunteers at the Food Bank are working tirelessly to change that. I was honored to deliver the keynote opening address at their recent "Hunger Conference". The County is proud to call this organization a Live Well San Diego partner. And they're not just a food bank anymore, they're also a "nutrition bank", striving to deliver more fresh food than ever before. Bravo!

Serving For Cerebral Palsy

United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego has been an important part of the community for decades. This year I was honored to take part in its 34th annual "Firefighters and Friends Celebrity Waiters Luncheon". This event raised $54,000 from ticket sales, raffles, and generous donations. Proceeds will benefit those in San Diego County with cerebral palsy. There are treatments for the disorder but unfortunately there is still no cure. I had such a great day meeting some adults with CP as well as those who care for them. I even enjoyed serving lunch and clearing the tables. It brought me back to my old days as a server in college.

Time To Get Your Flu Shot!

If I can do it, you can too. Yes, it's that time of year again. Every year thousands of Americans die from the flu. Experts agree, the vaccine isn't always perfect but it's our best "shot" at preventing the illness. By the way, it didn't really hurt.
